The Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas honored Mr. Black as the 15th Texas Legal Legend in 2014. This honor is only bestowed upon lawyers who have made significant contributions to the practice of law in Texas, the community, and the State Bar of Texas. Mr. Black is the youngest lawyer ever selected to receive this honor. In 2011, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas Tech School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude, was selected for membership in the legal honor society Order of the Coif, and served as Casenote Editor of the Texas Tech Law Review. He was also honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas at El Paso in 2012. He has also been recognized by Best Lawyers in America®, Super Lawyers, including Top 100 Lawyers in the Houston Region, Who’s Who in American Law, and has a Preeminent AV rating with Martindale-Hubbell.
Over his distinguished career, Mr. Black has gained recognition for his successful trial experience and his expansive professional alternative dispute resolution practice. He has mediated or arbitrated more than 4,500 legal matters. Chambers and Partners® honored Mr. Black in its inaugural rankings of Mediators Nationwide. He is one of only twenty mediators recognized nationwide. Mr. Black an active member of the American Arbitration Association Roster of Neutrals.
Mr. Black has been selected to work extensively with the State Bar of Texas. He has served as Chair of the Board of Directors, Chair of the Policy Manual Subcommittee, Chair of the Facilities and Equipment Subcommittee, Co-Chair of the Nomination and Elections Subcommittee, Vice Chair of the Executive Committee, and on the Board of Trustees of the Texas Bar Foundation. Because of his tireless efforts working on behalf of the State Bar of Texas, the Board of Directors honored him with a Certificate of Merit for his leadership and outstanding contributions to the legal profession and a Presidential Citation for outstanding service.
From 2011 – 2012, Mr. Black served as President of the State Bar of Texas. As State Bar President, he spearheaded a law-related education initiative, “Oyez, Oyez, Oh Yay! Civics Resources for Texas Students and Teachers,” to provide Texas schools with free online resources on important court cases students are required to study. This presidential initiative received the 2012 National Association of American Bar Executives/Lexis Nexis Award for Community Outreach and Education.
In addition to being licensed to practice law in Texas for more than 45 years years, Mr. Black is also admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In his spare time, Mr. Black volunteers his time to give back to the community in which he serves. He is a former president of the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, a former president of the Jefferson County Bar Association, and a former trustee and executive committee member of the Texas Bar Foundation. He is currently the Chair of Texas Board of Disciplinary Appeals.
